I live in the Reddings if you want someone to lend a hand. Sounds to me
like a relatively straightforward server scenario. The only thing I've
not tried listed below is a print server, and setting up the full
multi-functionality of the fax/printer may cause a few problems but at
least brother supply some drivers:

Another thing worth thinking about is setting up a streaming media
server using daapd ... I have done this with some success and even added
SSL support, so I could stream from home to my workplace securely. Daap
is the protocol used by itunes btw.

Subject: [Gloucs] help
Hi there people, I have been lurking on the list for about 12 months
now and I've finally got to the stage where i have something to post /
ask, now please bear with me as i will be using rude words like
"windows" in this message.
basically, this is the story ....
i'm now in a position to add a server to my home network, my main pc
runs windows but also has apache & php installed to help with my
web-development.
what i'm looking to do is add a Linux-based server into my existing
network, it must have apache, mysql & php installed and also an ftp
server would be nice. It will also be used as a printer server where
the other 2 pc's on the network send documents to it for printing.
I also would like to add a 300gb usb hard-drive to it to use as a media
store and allow my pc and my wifes pc to access it to retrieve music &
video clips etc.
i have looked around and found a few distro that may do what i want,
however i would also prefer a GUI if possible.
so to recap here's my goal :-
* Linux based server.
* running apache, php, mysql & ftp server.
* graphical interface.
* support external usb drive.
* allow printing via a brother mfc-210 printer/fax.
you'll have to forgive me if I've not explained this to well, but i'm
pretty confident that with the knowledge available on this list, i can
achieve my goal and in time i can move from wife from windows to ubuntu
or some other nice distro (she's already using firefox, thunderbird and
openoffice).
so please can you give me some pointers, if anyone lives near
shurdington and could pop round, i can supply coffee, beer or anything
required.
many thanks
Ian
