I use my on-board sound card (ASUS P4PE motherboard) for the same
purpose.  The sound quality varies greatly due mainly to the varying
quality of my vinyl records.  I do get quite a bit of buzz from the
card when listening on headphones though.  I have a cheap sound blaster
card available which I keep meaning to try out.

You did not mention applications to use; that's a whole thread of
discussion in itself. I really like rezound but if you're
