This sounds like GRUB, the boot loader, is failing to start up.
Typically this is because the hard drives are not partitioned correctly,
or because GRUB believes that the partitions are different to reality.
Basically it sounds like your computer either can't find GRUB at all, or
can't find enough of it to be useable.

Can you describe the hard disks and their partitions on the server
please?
I suspect you have an unusual or mixed hard disk configuration, or
unusual partitions, perhaps due to mixing IDE and SATA drives, a
misconfigured attempt at RAID or LVM, disk failure or other unusual
addition/removal of partitions?
Bring the hardware along to our meeting next week- Tue 14 Aug 6pm
