Don't be so negative. If it was meant to be a sophisticated gateway
monitor then it failed, but I suspect it was supposed to be a quick 'n'
dirty hack, and it works in that respect.

Make mistakes once. If you code something else that relies upon ping
returning an error and you don't include a timeout, THEN you're not such a
good programmer. Not because you made a mistake, but because you didn't
learn from the first time you made a mistake. At least you had the balls
to put the code up here for all to see.
