Try to get one with Intel graphics - then you get open source 3D
graphics drivers in every distro.

Built-in analogue telephone/fax modems can be tricky on Linux with
almost every make of laptop.    (Fewer and fewer laptops even have
modems, despite their utility for road warriors.  I always seems to
end up places without WiFi or GSM coverage.)
