Eh? I signed up several years ago from Ubuntu Dapper 6.06. I just tried
creating a new account using Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 and had no problems, and
got no warnings about Linux nor MS-Windows.

I was using:

Firefox 3.0.13
Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 LTS
LXDE

I also had the acroread and adobe-flashplugin Firefox plugins, but I
didn't notice any Flash when signing up.

Do you and your son share the same email address? Facebook does use
email addresses to uniquely identify users.

Alternatively, are you sure it wasn't just remembering Chris' email
address from a cookie saved during a previous session? ("Remember me"
etc)
