Yes, the whole virtualbox project is owned and maintained by Oracle (was Sun) and I'm not sure there is much of a development community.

As a result, I don't think we'll see USB support soon and certainly not committed upstream.

I believe the closed source version has a free license for personal use but I'd always try to stick to the OSE version at all costs.
