You could try Trinity when Gnome 2 `runs out' or maybe xfce. With the
gtk-kde theme engine you should be able to get KDE 3 looking a bit like
Gnome 2. But hopefully Gnome 3 might cause a fork and mean that Gnome 2
goes on.....
Organisations seem to think that everyone wants shiny monitors and iPad
like interfaces that are so dumbed down as to be useless to a
professional computer user....:-(
