My sincere thanks for the suggestions.  The hplip file was already the latest
version.
However, a message referring to the toner cartridge caused me to take it out,
and I found with mixed horror and joy that there was another bit of coloured
plastic which I had failed to remove !

As my dear wife so neatly put it, it is usually something stupid.
