I am now able to confirm the cause of my printer problems on my wife's
Ubuntu 12.04  laptop.
HP have chosen not to use their traditional postscript, but to use something 
called zjs streaming.  
Had I known this, we wopuld certainly not bought the hp laserjet p1103w.

All our earlier HP laserjets worked directly on postscript files using 
ghostscript as the driver. That is what I thought we were getting.

It worked OK on the earlier Ubuntu LTS, but since upgrading to 12.04 I have
had no luck.     Still trying.
