Sorry to reply again but I thought you were referring to the /etc/fstab
not the mount cmd. The attachment wasn't there on the list posted
message.
$ mount /mnt/cdrom
mount: block device /dev/hdb is write-protected, mounting read-only
This is perfectly normal, it's basically saying you can't write files to a
CD which is correct. Also a gave the wrong ls command to issue but I the
output from the mount command indicates you drive is there and working.
To get the disc out of the drive you'll need to issue:
$ umount /mnt/cdrom
Looking at the Mandrake manual
http://doc.mandrakelinux.com/MandrakeLinux/100/en/Starter.html/advanced.html
under section 16 at 'Managing Removable devices'. This tells you how to
modify removable device options (without all the messing around at the
command line). I assume your drive appears in the control center and is
set-up. I would suspect the only thing missing is the icon on the
desktop, can you open a konqueror window and open the CD drive from there?
