[Herefordshire] Firewall & router on Live CD

Hi,

I was speaking to a friend of mine last night, who has just configured Smoothwall on a flash based IDE device - the PC runs with no HDD, and runs with only a PSU and processor fan. As a result it is very silent, and quite quick. I never see the point in running a firewall from a live CD unless you don't have a hdd and want to boot from CD each time you restart - a number of these allow saving of data to floppy disk, but the bootup time of these is quite slow, which is not good if the system goes down and you need the connection up quickly.

Just my thoughts of course...
Andrew.

someone was asking about a firewall or router the other day I am testing
this out... very good doesn't write to the PC...

Linux LiveCD Router supports all ADSL modems that are connected through an
ethernet card, as well as PPPoE modems. In addition the USB modems Alcatel
SpeedTouch and Conexant AccessRunner are supported.

looks good you have to go to the website to read the instructions i think

Ok I have now come to the conclusion that microsoft are a pain in the
@rse...

Sorry just had to get that out....

As you may have gathered I had some issues with my server machine..(dont fix
what isnt broke)great motto that....

Anyway... I formatted the c drive on my win2k server machine reinstall win2k
no problem tried to install sP4 corrupt file.... ok I thought I will just
install a firewall & download SP4... no firewall software.. 5 times I ended
up formatting & reinstalling the os before I managed to download a firewall
& SP4..

Ok... where is this going. I run 4 websites on my server machine 1 of these
has a forum for the counterstrike clan im in. I've had it with windows &
want to put it on my Linux machine but don't really have any idea how to
setup 4 apache servers... (quite easy in windows.)

1.Things I am worried about I have broadband 1m - using Alcatel usb modem
fish thing... when I tried the live version of SUSE9.2 It wouldn't let me do
the equivalent of DUN... Is this easy to setup????

2. If It Is quite easy can I make the machine a gateway like my server
machine at the moment..( I assume I will have to edit some file to make my
machine have my gateway IP ADDRESS???

3. I love computers....

P.S thanks everyone who replied to my last query regarding installing my new
drive.... After taking out the drive & running in failsafe mode. Linux asked
to I want to remove the drive usr to which I said yes.. I removed the link &
then fixed its self.....

Thanks again

Dave
