[HLUG] Debian - getting NIC working

It appears that using Ubuntu we get a network interface (100MBPS), however I
need to try Debian again on the disk to see whether it is something I did in
configuration that made it go.

Does the machine have more than one NIC? Is the link up (use ethtool or
