[Herefordshire] external Serial modem

I gathered from several meetings ago that, because Mandrake Linux will not  
recognise my internal modem, I needed to get an external serial modem.   
Having finally got my old one back from my daughter, this does not work  
either.  I have tried looking for one in various computer shops and on the  
web, but I can't find one which matches the list of compatible modems on  
the Mandrake Hardware site.

Can anyone suggest one
