[Herefordshire] external Serial modem

Virtually ANY external serial port based hardware modem should work. We
recently got 7 56k modems of this type together and they all worked
without any extra configuration.
So I think your modem may be duff ... :-(
The Hayes and diamond ones are especiaaly good
