[HLUG] best cross-platform video conferencing - suggestions?

Some buddies and I wish to put our pile of ramshackle webcams, 
microphones and speakers together, so we can all video conference 
together at variable bandwidths. We've all got broadband and live dotted 
all over the world. About half of us use Linux, half Windoze.

Is there any one app that will suit us best?
Any webcams worth / not worth pursuing?
