So you may say why complile packages for 486 as no-one uses it anymore? 
Well Slackware are very conservative and compiling for 486 (and above) 
processors means total compatibility for older processors. Mandrive 
mainly compile their distro for 686 and higher, ie it will only run on 
at least a PII processor.

Ultimately, some people dont believe theres that much speed difference 
getting pacakages compiled for your processor, and I would agree. Only 
might make a difference for intensive applications ie video, ray tracing 
etc.
