Hi Mike
Yes this is a very quite list indeed, 5 posts last month and only 9
posts last month and 1 so far this month.
Are you using the net-install CD of CentOS to do a limited install ?
I got fed up with the way Red Hat which therefore CentOS have got the
ridiculous idea that it is a good idea to make you burn 4 or 5 CDs when
you only want to do a basic no gui server install. This is just plain
dumb & stupid and so is having to download the DVD install to do the
same and also a lot of the servers I put a no gui install onto don't
even have DVD drives in them.
This is what I was doing up until recently. But not due to a low usage
cap of 50GB on my Zen Internet ADSL package I have decided to change my
approach and setup a CentOS mirror on my LAN so I only got one hefty
rysnc and then afterwards all the installs will be much faster and I
will not be duplicating downloaded data over the ADSL.
The following is taken from

1. Can I install CentOS 5 with just the first CD?
You can do a minimal install that just requires the first CD by
performing the following two steps during the installation:
* During the category/task selection, deselect all package
categories, and choose the "Customize now" option at the bottom of
screen.
* During the customized package selection, deselect everything.
<!> There are reports that more than CD 1 is required in the following
case:
* If you use some software raid options (this will also require CD 2
and 5)
When the anaconda installer notes that additional disks will be
required, but you desire a one CD install, the quick answer is one or
more of the following approaches:
*
Trim back and do a minimal install. Then once the install is up
and running, pull in more packages with yum, and add more options later.
* Use the method: linux text ( Note: you can't do a minimal install
using the Text mode, you *must* use the GUI mode if you are looking to
install the minimal package set)
If you want to avoid using more than one CD, but want to install more
than just the minimal set of packages, you could also consider doing a
network installation. A network installation ISO (called boot.iso) is
available from the 5/os/<arch>/images/ directory on CentOS mirrors.
It might be worth looking into trying to create a custom install CD with
even less on it, but I feel this might be a lot of work for not a lot of
benefit but would be interested in hearing other people's views.
Regards
Darren

Subject: [Herts] Meeting ?
All gone very quiet on the Hertslug list.
Do we need to read pages 60-63 of this months linux format or is it
always this quiet at this time of year?
Anything going on at the meeting on Wednesday?
Anyone know anything about how to reduce bloat on an install? I need to
find out how to squish Red Hat (or Centos) down to DSL proportions (with
a limited set of functionality. How do you figure out what are the
essentials and what you can leave out?
