Sorry I don't understand the relevance of the first statement to the
following one (I do have severe cold and I'm poor form so it could well

Why not? I know what your saying tho- Mozilla is awfully hard to get
your head around and that kde desktop is a nightmare.
I think, open source (due to its open nature) offers far more
configurable options than closed source. This is a great thing, but it
often gets presented as increased complexity rather than flexibility.
Ultimately, you will use the aspects of software that you need.
