Some visually handicapped people swear by Linux, and there are theoretical
reasons why it should work well. After all, every obstacle in producing a
Graphical or even a Screen orientated environment is a feature that makes
the single lane Command Line Interface more attractive and potentially
more usable by a motivated blind person

I wouldn't even think about giving up on Linux, assuming that there
is a minimal willingness to collaborate, and thereby build on the work of
others.
