Michael, I am fairly sure that the best thing to do is a re-install, as you
suggested and I will do this. I will be going to the meeting early, so there
should be plenty of time.

I suspect that there is something wron with PAM, which means that
no processes requiring authentication (such as logging in) can
proceed. You can probably only get to the desktop because there
is probably a by-pass or auto-login that (I guess) does not need
PAM.
