Thanks for the replies, everyone.

Every region seems to have its own unique geographical distribution of population, transport links and suitable venues, which always affects the dynamics of tech & cultural group viability. Things inevitably change with time too. People move, and everyone’s interests in various topics wander. Its difficult, too, to pitch group meetings at the right level – they can be too general or too specialised, either of which can affect attendance.

Roger, the various “Raspberry Jam” events do seem to be gaining in popularity – which is good to see. Not bought one myself yet, but I suspect I will once I’m more settled. Its definitely a hot topic, and there was some talk at the WYLUG meeting about how all the RasPi stuff had recently drawn attention away from general Linux discussions.

Personally, I’m interested in a very wide range of technological and scientific “stuff” (not just digital tech) – but also enjoy arts-based activities too (e.g. theatre, writing) – so like to feed both parts of my brain ;-) I’m not actually looking for a specialist Linux group, per se, but experience tells me that people who are into Linux often have a wide and eclectic range of other interests – and so are worth taking notice of.

Thanks, Michael, for naming Vox as the former HUDLUG venue. Wood street does seem to have a nice “alternative” feel to it – so I’m not too surprised ;-)

Cheers too, Eric, for mentioning the Bradford LUG. I may well pop along there too, at some point, although like everyone I do have a finite amount of “hobby / interest” time so have to have some limit on prospective activities ;-)

Anyone here travel over to MADLAB in Manchester on a regular basis? I still usually pop over for the monthly FSFE (Free Software Foundation Europe) meetings.

David
