Hello,
Quick question. I know I could provide more detail, and I will if
asked, however I don't have much time right now.
Imagine Knoppix 3.4 HD install as client connecting via ethernet
cabling and an alcatel modem / router / multiport to the server running
SuSe 9.1 pro. I've gone to some effort to make sure the X server on the
SuSe machine is listening correctly, and that the SuSe firewall has the
TCP and UDP ports open as required.
>From Knoppix client, typing [as root from the console, withoput X
running] "X -query <servername>" produces a very nice interface with
the remote KDM and a good user session to the server. IE everything
works.
The Knoppix client lists "Remote connection" among it's login options,
so I try that and attempt a connection to the server via the GUI. I get
a grey stippled screen with a big 'X' for the mouse pointer, followed
by X shutting down, being momentarily thrownback to the console, then
local X restarting and giving me the login options again.
What is the likely way in which I am going wrong? Please don't tell me
that a packaged feature of the well-used Knoppix distro is actually
broken! - more likely I've missed something.
The aim is to provide a GUI driven access over XDMCP to the server,
that any $USER [target: 5 yr old boy ;)] can use. This is to replace my
freeNX system which while being good, is also seriously slow and
resource intensive, and doesnt allow all software to run on the remote
machine - e.g. konq wont work, tuxpaint hangs for 5 min on startup etc
etc.
Again thanks for any help, please tell me if you need more info.
- Andrew
