Thanks for the help. I have got round to trying again, but....

a. Its an Intel 536 internal modem, which is supposed to work in Linux,
and I have the driver from the internet.
b. Thanks Karl, you wrote:

autoconf.h should be generated by autoconf

try running
./autoconf
configure
make 536 (?? I don't know about this but i trust you)
make install

I tried
./ autoconf but no go.
here is the printout of the session.

    linux:~/Desktop/intel-536EP-2.56.76.0-suse91-UP # make clean

    cd coredrv; make clean

    make[l]: Entering directory
    'Vroot/Desktop/intel-536EP-2.56.76.0-suse91-UP/coredrv'

    rm -f *.ko *.o *~ core

    make[l]: Leaving directory
    `/root/Desktop/intel-536EP-2.56.76.0-suse91-UP/coredr v'

    rm -f *.o *.ko

    linux:~/Desktop/intel-536EP-2.56.76.0-suse91-UP #

    ./autoconf

bash: ./autoconf: No such file or directory

    linux:~/Desktop/intel-536EP-2.56.76.0-suse91-UP #

    ./autoconf configure

bash: ./autoconf: No such file or directory

    linux:~/Desktop/intel-536EP-2.56.76.0-suse91-UP #

    make 536

    Module precompile check

    Current running kernel is: 2.6.4-52-default

    /lib/modules... autoconf.h does not exist

    /please install kernel source/

    make: *** [check] Error 1

    linux:~/Desktop/intel-536EP-2.56.76.0-suse91-UP #

I have italicised the request to" install kernel source". How do I do
this, and what is it?
I assume it should be in /lib/modules from the above stuff. I will have
a fiddle to see if I can locate it on the DVD

c. George: Thanks for the info on Onspeed. They say they have a super
compression system that sends stuff to ones computer where it is
expanded. If so, why is this kind of system not in general use? It
surely must be vastly superior to the compression used by dial-up and
Zip files. Seems it must lose data. Your account of multiple access to
servers seems more understandable to me.

I remember CPM, and DOS . I think I could handle them. You really need
brainpower for Linux.
Cheers
Chris
