Yes, I now have it working too... the Bulldog install script was really dumb 
(or perhaps I was) and thanks go to Kev for poiting out that maybe it needed 
to be told the b****y obvious!

It didn't need "COM1" as an answer but /dev/ttyS0

Doh!
