Thank you for that comment Karl. I thought I might get brickbats - well
that might happen yet but that first response is relaxing.
I was 20 years an NCO in the Army outfit which once graced a barracks in
Ashford. The rose of knowledge in laurel leaves and the motto Manui Dat
Cognitio Vires (Knowledge Giveth Strength Unto the Arm) was its cap
badge. Those who know - know. Those who don't - oh well never mind. They
have gone somewhere else now.
But after spending some years sparish time doing an OU degree I sought a
commission but the only lot that would have me was the Royal Army
Educational Corps whose cap badge (before it was Royal) was an open book
on crossed lances. When they asked King George VI to approve it having a
crown on top when it was made a Royal Corps he said 'Not with that badge
you can't, it's 'orrible. Here's me own idea' (I paraphrase!) Then of
course our masters knew that was exactly the cap badge they wanted. HM
had drawn a flaming torch with the scroll RAEC across it. Incidentally
the only corps to have an abbreviated title on its badge. And that's
what I wore for my last 5 years at Shorncliffe - great fun.
I gave a clue with the word 'pedantic'. Ho yes.
My illustrious late father was an infanteer in the Royal East Kent
Regiment (The Buffs) and they had a huge dragon as a cap badge which was
known throughout the regiment as The Pig.
But that is about the only connection.
>After that pedantic diatribe can anyone guess what cap badge I wore in
>> the Army?
Nice post, you're badge didn't happen to have a pig on it? Just by some
strange twist of coincidental fate?
Regards,
Karl
