After freezing, it POSTed. Which means I can boot a kernel and the
device will be available to the OS. 

I knew about that trick, I really did. However didn't think of it. Maybe
I couldn't see the MDF for the forest or something. Thanks for the tip
Dan. Now all I have to do is find a live CD which will carefully copy
the important data from the drive.

Oh joy, this one can wait until the new year.
