[Klug-general] Lots of disk activity slowing me down

Thanks to four kluggers, Margot, MikeM, George Prowse and Karl Lattimer 
for four very useful tips. I shall try them all, if I can work out 
exactly how to do each one.
For Karl, I am not sure how to check which kernel version I'm using. I 
thought either ver or kernel at a terminal would pop it up but it doesn't.
I knew this once - it's me age - please remind me. Ta.
