Well, apple have announced their new iPhone.
And reaction so far seems to be that people love it and it will be a
success (tho most of these people appear to be worshipers at the church
of apple).
However, looking at it, its got me thinking:
- - Its not got buttons so there is no tactile feedback, you can't use the
phone unless you are looking at it
- - What about when wearing gloves?
- - That screen is likely to scratch to hell, just like the iPods.
- - Will it withstand the abuse we put our phones through?
- - What about battery life?
Now many people are bemoaning current phones as having a crap UI, but I
am wondering, what is it they are struggling with? The decent nokias
(read the lower end ones) all seem to have a loverly interface, very
easy to use. The keypad gives you some feedback (nobbles on the 5 key so
you can find it?) so you can use it without looking. You can use it in
gloves easy enough.
But, more over. Its a phone. You make phone calls, you send SIMPLE
text messages with it. It works. Whats so broken with it?
But then I consider those who seem to want a PDA/Phone combo, and yes
people are right, the UI sucks lots on all current units. But who here
remembers the psion 5? Great units, such a tragedy they went out of
production.
Ultimately, its an apple product, people will buy it, either cos they
worship at the church of apple, or they just want a new Penis^W Gadget.
I just don't think its as wonderfully revolutionary as people think it
is.
Thoughts?
