[Klug-general] 64 bits

I am close to upgrading and I wondered what the group thought would be 
the better choice of  processor. I had thought an AMD64 3Ghz sounded 
cool but I need advice about Intel dual core and quad core. Are the 
latter 64 bit processors or just several 32 bit processors in parallel? 
Which processor will a recent Linux kernel operate on best?
All advice gratefully received.
