UNetbootin is very handy, but It doesn't really take care of the disk in the
first place. Install the syslinux package first - then cat over mbr.bin to
the device. Then format it as fat32 with gparted, remembering to set the
boot flag to on. Then I've found it to be pretty reliable.

Ubuntu itself has a built in tool, if you go to Administration - > USB
Startup Disk Creator.

This allows you to turn an Ubuntu ISO (maybe others?) into a bootable USB
stick - even a persistent install where your settings are saved - very
handy.
