One thing worth noting is that Ubuntu does its best to find drivers for 
things - but only if it is already connected to the internet.  The way I 
handled this with my Linksys card was to have the laptop connected via a 
wired connection before running up Ubuntu.  It then detects the card and 
asks if I want to install the restricted driver.  After doing so I could 
remove the wired connection and wireless was fine.  This worked with 
7.10 and 9.04.
