I had an IP4000 which wasn't a bad printer, except the Linux support
was terrible. Canon had no Linux drivers for the device, and the
community drivers were limited to 300dpi (and awful quality). I gave
up and bought an HP printer in the end, which worked flawlessly out
the box, and I swore I would only buy HP printers due to HP's Linux
support.
However, it looks like Canon has changed, check out the download page
for that printer here:-

Select Linux in the drop down and they have Debian drivers tested on
Ubuntu 9.04. They also provide RPM and source. So well done Canon!
