Thanks for that Mike. I recall that Mandriva and PCLinuxOS offer to 
install nfs-utils. But Kubuntu doesn't seem to have it available. So I 
looked for anything beginning nfs and found lots. I've now installed 
what seems to be the basic stuff.

I then thought that I would need some sort of samba thingy for printing 
from virtualbox/windows and was equally baffled by the huge number of 
offerings. I selected what seemed to be valid stuff and a samba icon 
appeared in the start menu but when I click it nothing happens.

Still trying but beginning to lose heart.
