Yep great idea and could be done on Software Freedom Day
http://softwarefreedomday.org/. I know a group in Bracknell do a stand at
their local shopping centre and apparently it works well.

Let us know how you get on organising it Peter and what date you think is
good. I am sure as many of us who can will come and help. We can get free
Ubuntu CD's from Canonical and I already have some large-ish KLUG/Linux
posters for a display.
