I am currently pursuading the University of Greenwich to consider purchasing
a server and to then run an OSS Media server, on Linux, since the head of
ICT systems is a lover of Debian.
The official requirements list is for an integrated system.
Is anyone already running some kind of open source media service on Linux /
Unix?
Has anyone ever found a system that can run these services from an OSS Media
server?
- upload and storage of existing media assets (in many formats, including
wmv, avi, mov, flv, mp3, etc.)
- delivery of those assets (both as downloads and as streamed media) via
a web front end and in a variety of formats to suit varying (and varying
sizes of) devices
- live streaming of events
- delivery of live streaming via a web front end
- simultaneous production of static media from live streamed events
- searchable, categorised media assets; so that media can either be
tagged or be situated in a folder structure (or both) using
School/Department/Course/Project/Conference/Research group information
- ability to edit the media (download/upload to replace, online metadata
editing), possibly with workflow management and editing history
- role-based access to manage and upload media, such that users may have
rights to manage assets with a particular tag or in a particular location,
but not elsewhere
- options of open and restricted access to view / download media, such
that some media will be restricted to e.g. participants in a certain course,
but others will be open to everyone
- connection with the existing University network, user database and
possibly client machines (although maybe web access for all functions to
make this unnecessary)
Looking forward to your ideas. BTW ITALC is running well here, thanks for
your advice.
