Thanks K, I have checked on the register and have not been able to yield any
results at the moment on media servers.

Has anyone ever had experience of running an OSS media/streaming server
solution like phpmotion as recommended by Dan?

Has anyone ever assessed the viability of media server services?

I have included some specs below for a general server that could accommodate
a Linux OS and associated applications.

To fine tune the specs it could be necessary to understand in detail the
volume of data that is to be retained plus the concurrent users sessions and
general bandwidth consumption and other application specific requirements.
So I am looking into this further.

Perhaps the streaming software and resources are required as a first step,
though the distro could be configured for optimum use and hardware
compatibility.

The likely general server specs are:

HP ProLiant DL360 G7 Server

475-4091408.html

2 x Quad-core Intel Xeon 5600 family cpu ( if anticipating high CPU usage
then 2 x 6 core)

16 Gig DDR3 RAM

8 x HP 146GB 6G SAS 15K SFF( 2 x OS mirrored) ( 6 x RAID 5 or better for
storage if after speed ) or HP 500GB 6G SAS 7.2K rpm SFF if require storage.

2 x GigE interfaces.

RedHad/Suse or ( Centos).

2 x power supplies.

Configuration item options to support the above.

Ram and Disk up to 192GB and 4TB respectively per server.

I am currently pursuading the University of Greenwich to consider purchasing
a server and to then run an OSS Media server, on Linux, since the head of
ICT systems is a lover of Debian.
The official requirements list is for an integrated system.

Is anyone already running some kind of open source media service on Linux /
Unix?
Has anyone ever found a system that can run these services from an OSS Media
server?
