I thought I'd update this thread so say that I found the answer

I hunted around on the firebug page and found out about the firephp
extension. I installed that  and added the class and function to my page.

Then low and behold a big fat error popped up and a link to
the relevant line of code. 2 mins fiddling and it's all working in it's
collapsing glory
