couldn't this be managed with the find application. Something along the
lines of "find all files with "-" in their name and replace it with sed
acting on the mv command. OK this will probably require going in a script
but interesting problem.

My biggest joy with file names was using get_iplayer when there was a show
containing cover versions of Bob Dylan songs called "...sings Dylan" After
downloading it I couldn't find it in my file browser until I looked again at
the programme name and realised that the system had concluded that it was a
file to be hidden.
