No, fortunately HDMI supports multichannel PCM audio, I'm not aware of
the upper-limit, but it does handle 5.1.

On my AV receiver it displays the mode that the audio is being
received on the LCD and automatically switches to DolbyD/DTS whenever
that type of signal is received.

It is my understanding that multichannel PCM is the base requirement
and DolbyD/DTS etc can only be used if the receiving device supports
decoding the streams, otherwise multichannel PCM is all you are able
to use.

I didn't get a chance to finish testing MythTV before sending the
device back.  But I did get 0.24 to configure appropriately with
pulseaudio, and from the configuration options it looks like MythTV
has the option of passing Dolby/DTS direct, or up-sampling the stream
to multichannel PCM in case your receiver doesn't support them.
