Or for something completely different, try PCLinuxOS. Never known it 
fail an installation yet and it has everything you need.

But if you are nailed to Gnome then it will be different as it has KDE 
as the default desktop manager. But you do get a clickable script to 
install the latest LibreOffice instead of OOo so it might not stretch 
your laptop resources quite so much.

PCLOS has answered all my Linux requirements for several years now.
