The drivers nvidia have been churning out for years have been great. I 
dont see an upside of using FOSS drivers.

Nvidia's blob contains a load of proprietary magic so they'll never open 
source and until they and other graphics manufacturers open up their 
drivers no FOSS one for *any* card will be as good as the binary blob... 
unfortunately.

It just isn't worth losing industry secrets to the competition to 
satisfy 1% of their users. What they need to do is sponsor nouveau so a 
team could come up with different solutions to the same problems
