Speaking as a retired linguist, and (my wife says) a confirmed Victor
Meldrew, can I (safely?) comment that the word gender is frequently
misused these days - particularly by the politically correct.

The word you want is sex which differentiates betwixt male and female.

Gender is a grammatical term to differentiate betwixt masculine,
feminine and neuter in linguistics.

Should I now duck?
