I keep an old Windows XP CD handy, so I can do a quick install to check
hardware.  It is however an absolute last resort.  If it is just a quick
hardware test, I see no reason why it requires a valid Windows license and
you don't need to activate it.

It would be good if systems came with a hardware check CD.  I think some
dell systems have something like this.
