The VU, or Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is actually a good example of the
meaning of free in free software.  It was formed originally to be free
from the government and church influence.

Amsterdam is not the only place to have a free University in that sence.
Brussels has the "Université Libre de Bruxelles" for french speaking
students, and the "Vrije Universiteit Brussel" for dutch speaking. Useless
trivia, the ULB is the host of FOSDEM.
