I have a feeling that I've completely screwed up the LAMP installation
now. So as it also appears that using kubuntu could also be a problem
I'm going to overwrite the / partition with an up-to-date version of the
Pangolin and try again. Thanks to everyone for their help. I have saved
all the advice and it should all be available in my /home partition when
I resurface with a clean ubuntu installation.

Doh!
