Rather than minicom you might find moserial more useful, especially if 
you want to communicate in hex outside the normal character range.  I 
used moserial last year to talk to my new kiln controller, which has an 
RS232 interface.  At some point the plan is to get a Rasp-Pi and 
interface it to the house network but no time for such frivolity at the 
moment.

All assumes you can find a spec for the interface protocol though.
