Thanks will have to take a look at SL4A.
I already found ConnectBot (SSH client) but that's no good without
WIFI which is frequently lacking (my tablet is the WIFI only model).
As I mentioned, I rooted the device which got me thinking about users
and permissions and the possibility of password protecting settings
etc for the scenario where it gets lent out to someone I'd prefer to
not have too much access.
The first thing I discovered while looking into that is that Android
4.2 can have multiple user accounts, so I've now updated the device
from 4.1 to 4.2 and quickly setup a second user on it. Was hoping to
prevent the second user from installing software via google play, but
can only lord parental controls over them and deny purchases.
Additionally, the software I've installed for my primary user wasn't
available to the second user.
Then I found some kiosk style software in the play store which did
more or less exactly what I wanted.
