OK, SSL Certificate sorted... £5 from ssls.com, and installed on my home Apache server.

Local network DNS sorted, so that when I am IN the flat ownCloud.mydomain.com goes to local server, and when OUT of the flat it goes to the modem's public IP address.

Desktop client sorted, very nice - took a bit of fiddling to understand the 'folder' to sync TO (yeah, create it first in the web gui Paul!)

So far, so good.
