[Klug-general] (no subject)

Thanks for the welcoming.

We chose Ubuntu for its simplistic UI and its integration with our higher education programmes. Personally I would have chosen something more productivity-based, like Makulu.

Yes Jo, I finished there in 2014. I always thought it was a great system! Even though I'm ashamed to admit, I may have broken it once or twice during my time there.

Thanks Brian. Have been working on it for a long time and people are slowly coming round to the idea but the education system seems like a tough one to crack!
It is actually the other name for Karoshi which Sam mentioned. I am assuming his exposure was when he was a student at Dover Grammar School for Boys, am I right Sam? Such a small world :-)

Welcome Sam, I liked you comments re Ubuntu ;-)

I appreciate it wasn't your choice but (I suspect like Jo), it wouldn't have been my choice- at least not with Unity.

Jo: the link to Linux Schools is interesting, I've sent it to a formed colleague (I'm a retired Teacher) who I hope will find it useful. The school I taught in was 'anti' Linux, one of the IT support 'decision makers' was convinced it posed a risk to the school system ???? They wouldn't even have R Pi's on the network!

Regards
Brian

Welcome Sam, nice introduction looks like you are really busy.

What are you doing with the Ubuntu desktops for ease of use for the end-user? Are you using unity or something else?

Hi,

I'm not entirely sure if this is the right place to mention this but.. I work for an open source minded company in East Kent fairly desperate for techs. If you're looking for work in that area or know someone, please let me know.

Thanks, and sorry if this offends anyone.

Hello everybody,

Thought this would be a good time to introduce myself. I'm Sam and I'm a student at EKC Dover, studying Level 3 IT in my second year. I've been a Linux user for almost 7 years now (not exclusively, unfortunately). I've previously worked with Paul Sharrad at DGSB and was at the forefront of Karoshi's developments.

I've been tirelessly working on getting the 3 labs set up so the group can get the most out of our facilities. To clarify, we have 53 (17+17+19) PCs, all of which are in the process of being brainwashed toward Ubuntu, purely for the simplicity of the UI, which makes the transition for new users fairly easy.

A little more about me, I've got 4 Raspberry Pis, I spend a lot of time messing with them and seemingly endless time breaking them. C++ programmer for a couple of years. VB (Eurgh, I know) for a year.

Completed some work with Extrahop Networks being a part of the consulting process and installation of their (frankly, pretty amazing) platform.

If anybody is interested in a tour or to learn more about the facilities, please don't hesitate to contact James Snyder (james.snyder at eastkent.ac.uk<mailto:james.snyder at eastkent.ac.uk>) or myself.

Many thanks,

Gmail decided to rejig itself on my phone and now I only get a handful
of email notifications so this one has been buried until I fired up the
old Debian box...

I'm up for a Dover KLUG meetup. Agree with John that the facilities
sound great
